Image 6 idea

Image 6 - Wall street bombing

For this image im going to illustrate the Wall street bombing that killed 38 and seriously injured 143 people.

                                                    image 1
The original photo of the aftermath of the bombing.

image 2
I used the fire/smoke below and applied it to my image, this worked out pretty well and looks convincing.

image 3
I used the writing from the image below to make a quick street name, This street names circled red on image 3. I added this street name to give the viewer an idea of where this event takes place.

                                                                            Final image

I decided to add an image of a female screaming in the foreground but it doesnt quite work because it looks as if shes screaming at something else... maybe King Kong's on the building, who knows. I may take this out.

final!

Image 5 idea

Image 5 - Theory of Relativity

For this image, I'm going to set it around Albert Einstein and his theory of relativity.

Overview
In the early 1920s Einstein was the lead figure in a famous weekly physics colloquium at the University of Berlin. On March 30, 1921, the same year he was awarded the Nobel Prize, Einstein went to New York to give a lecture on his new Theory of Relativity

image 4 idea

                                                        Image 4 - Jazz Age

For this image i'm going to base it around the Jazz age and use Louis Armstrong as my focal point.
                                                                       sketch 1.

Some early ideas, trying to break down the image to get a feel for its composition and pattern.

                                                                              sketch 2.

First of all, i started off with this plain image of  Louis Armstrong (not painted). This will be the focal point and will be in full focus.

                                                                             sketch 3.

I then cutt out the bottom image and applied it behind Armstrong using the techniques learnt in class.
I used a cutout filter to give the background a stylish look, this also is quite blurred to show that all the focus is on Armstrong.

The image I used of his band playing.

sketch 4

Applied a third image to the scene to complete the background and also to illustrate that Louis Armstrong and his band play at the famous Cotton Club.

I edited out the car leaving just the background of the building and the crowd of men.

Music notes were added to give the image more character. I managed to have the twirling music notes wrap around his band members, giving it a collarge look.

Final image.

Yet a simple but effective image finished, I believe that this image has all the indications that explains it's period of the jazz age and who I focused it around.

Image 3 idea

                                                                        Image 3 - Dutch Schultz

For this image, i'm going to base it on one of New Yorks most notorious Crime Lords of the 1920s. His names Dutch Schultz, this criminal is wanted for bootlegging, racketeering and murder. There's so much reference to be used on this brutal guy. One of these events/acts that him and his gang performed is quite disturbing but should be illustrated to show how cruel he was.

A cherry pick of some events that occurred during the life of this criminal king.

  • By the mid-1920s, Schultz realized that bootlegging was the way to make serious money. He got involved in the beer trade working as a strong-arm goon for some of the bigger operators. He once drove a beer truck for the legendary Arnold Rothstein, and at one time he and Charles “Lucky” Luciano were members of the Jack “Legs” Diamond gang.

  •  The operation, which began modestly in the Bronx, was now expanding over to Manhattan’s upper West Side into the neighborhoods of Washington Heights, Yorkville, and Harlem. Schultz and Noe moved their headquarters out of the Bronx and onto East 149th Street in Manhattan. However, the gang’s move to Manhattan brought them into direct competition with Jack “Legs” Diamond.

  • In May 1929, Schultz participated in the Atlantic City Conference. The meeting was attended by dozens of mobsters of various ethnic and religious backgrounds from around the country. The main topic of the conference was cooperation between the gangs and the cities they represented, and to discuss plans for the day Prohibition was repealed.

  •  The two partners realized they could increase their profits by supplying beer to their rivals. If speakeasy owners turned down overtures to purchase beer from the Schultz/Noe combine, they were soon warned to buy it, or else. Joe and John Rock were brothers who decided to play hardball with Schultz. John quickly stepped aside, but his stubborn Irish brother refused to give in. One night Joe Rock was kidnapped by members of the Schultz / Noe gang, and brutalized. Rock was beaten and hung by his thumbs on a meat hook. The gang allegedly wrapped a gauze bandage over his eyes that had been smeared with the discharge from a gonorrhea infection. His family reportedly paid $35,000 for his release. Shortly after Joe Rock went blind.
                                                                         sketch 1
For this image I want to Illustrate the cruel tourchuring that occurred to Joe Rock because I think this particular incident truly shows how evil this crime lord and his posse's were.

A very quick sketch to get the feel of the situation, composition is crucial in this image. Placing the shadows in the correct places is important and i want to get it perfect.

Although I don't want this to be to graphic, when painting this, I plan to illustrate the cruel act by using shadows to visualize the scene using  the Noir style.

                                                                                     Image 2.

A digital painting of Dutch smoking, I'm quite happy with the actual painting of Dutch and I think I'm going to stick with it, looks pretty sweet so far

The background for this painting is just a very quick idea to show which direction I'm going to take, this will most likely change.
image 3

Now that I've got my main point of interest complete, I can now move onto planning out how I want the room to look. The background to this image contains several different images that have been arranged together to look like a grubby city apartment.

These are the 2 photos that I used to map out the far wall of my image.

image 4

For this part of the image, I started to draw in the silhouetted figures that carried out the torture. Their positions are temporary, I placed them there to give me an idea on how the image would look and if I had enough room.

I used this wooden fence to frame the picture and to also show that Dutch and his mob are in separate rooms.
This shows that Dutch is boss and has his mob to do most of the dirty work while he sits back and smokes.

image 5

Im quite happy with the figure keeping look out by the window, think I'll leave him where he is.

                                                                              image 6

The image is progressing really well and better than I expected, in this image I decided to use desaturate on Dutch so he'd be black and white along with the rest of the image. I also added flooring in the image because its way better than the boring grey tone that I originally had. The wooden flooring gives the image a sense of scale and perspective due to its alignment.

Image of the wooden flooring that I used. This floor changed the look of my image completely. I messed around with the curves tool to darken it and make it look gritty to match the rest of the picture.

Finished image! wooh.

After 6 hours of working on this image, Ive finally got an awesome outcome.. wooh! well I'm happy with it anyway. I defined several areas of the images and applied shadows to give the image more atmosphere and a sense of realism.

Image 2 idea

                                                      image 2-Prohibition

For this image, I am going to use the prohibition alcohol ban, illustrating a raid on an underground/basement illegal brewery. I think this is a good idea because it shows how strict they were on cracking down on illegal contraband during this prohibition.

For this image, I plan to digitally paint it using Photoshop, but before this can be done, initial sketches are key in it's development.

A quick drawing of my idea, i'm quite happy with certain areas of this sketch. However the closest  two characters need to be enlarged and the tables perspective altered.

The next stage will be to take this sketch into photoshop and improve certain areas before painting over the top.

A quick outline was drawn over the top, giving the characters and the room some atmosphere. This digital painting is still in it's very early stages and needs a hell of alot of work.

Now that I've blocked out the basic image, I am going to start adding some detail to the room.

This image had some drastic changes, I increased the size of the two criminals in front to balance the composition and also to give the impression that these two are in the shit.

I had an idea to put a Prohibition propaganda poster on the wall with a massive red cross in the centre of it. This represents that these people/criminals are against the prohibition.

I took a photo of my wall in the back yard and used it to texture the basement wall. I quite like this technique of blending digital and photo imagery together, I might do the same for the floor.

Started to add detail to the cops, i quite like they're postures, they look quite menacing!

Final image

This image has developed vast amounts since the first original sketch. I'm quite pleased with it and I believe that it addresses the crack down on illegal contraband during the prohibition fairly well.

Image 1 idea

                                          Image 1-New york to Paris!

For the first image, I'm going to base it around the Charles Lindbergh's solo flight from New York to Paris event.
The first idea that came into my head as I was researching was to have the two iconic structures from both cities; 'Statue of Liberty' and the 'Eiffel Tower' and have Charles Lindbergh flying in-between them both.

I'm going to sketch out this idea and see what happens, I may add items to make the image more interesting as i progress.

Sketch 1

This is the basic idea I had in mind, I like the idea it gives off but it needs something to make it look more interesting. Also it doesn't tell the viewer on what event it is. I'll make this more clear in the next few sketches.

Sketch 2
I added trees and a fence to balance the composition. I'm liking this image so far, although it still needs something to explain the event.

In the next sketch, I'm going to add a banner coming from the back of the plane to explain the event.

Sketch 3
For this image, I moved the plane closer to the Eiffel tower and added a banner trailing from the back of the plane saying "Lindberg does it solo! New York to Paris - 3,600 miles!"

The image is coming along nicely but still needs work. Perhaps adding a world globe in the bottom centre might improve the picture and also tell the viewer on what's being accomplished.

Sketch 4
In this sketch, I drew up a quick half of a world globes to symbolize the two continents.

I also added the name of Charles Lindberg's plane on the globe.

Sketch 5
This is looking pretty funny and awesome at the same time. I'm quite happy with this sketch and I think it's ready to move on to the next stage.

I've added two flags representing both countries and increased the size of Charles's head for a comedic value

Now that I've established the basic idea on how I want this image to look like, I'm going to go ahead and attempt this using different types of media. A thing or two may change during this process because I'm still not 100% happy with the composition. I might move the two city icons further apart, giving the picture a better frame.

Roaring twneties - new york - research

                                                 Wall street bombing - 1920

The Wall Street bombing occurred at 12:01 pm on Thursday, September 16, 1920, in the Financial District of New York City. The blast killed 38 and seriously injured 143. Although the bombing was never solved, investigators and historians think it likely the Wall Street bombing was carried out by Galleanists (Italian anarchists), a group responsible for a series of bombings the previous year . The attack was related to postwar social unrest, labor struggles and anti-capitalist agitation in the United States.

At noon, a horse-drawn wagon passed by lunchtime crowds on Wall Street in New York City and stopped across the street from the headquarters of theJ.P. Morgan bank at 23 Wall Street, on the Financial District's busiest corner. Inside, 100 pounds (45 kg) of dynamite with 500 pounds (230 kg) of heavy, cast-iron sash weights exploded in a timer-set detonation, sending the slugs tearing through the air. The horse and wagon were blasted into small fragments, but the driver was believed to have left the vehicle and escaped.

Although the main point of this image was to show the amount of murders that took place, you can see that the ground was all destroyed from the bomb and it is full of ash and rubble
